Gordonsville's climate usually consists of warm humid summers
and mild winters.
The town was named for Nathaniel Gordon, who owned Gordon's
Tavern, a popular stop for travelers during the early 1800's. In
1813 Nathaniel Gordon became the first postmaster of what had
become known as "Gordonsville".
The
junction of two railroads and two turnpikes caused the town to
grow and develop in the 1850's. Gordonsville was vitally
important to The Confederate Army during the Civil War years. In
1862, the Exchange Hotel was used a a hospital for wounded
soldiers. Many who died at the hospital are buried at Maplewood
Cemetery.
In 1870, Gordonsville became an incorporated town.
